Out With The Old, In With The New

Atom Fabs Ltd — 22/05/2026

We recently completed the full replacement of an old rusty fire escape staircase with a brand new mild steel galvanised staircase, designed, fabricated, and installed by the team at Atom Fabs.

Every project starts long before fabrication begins. After carrying out a couple of detailed site visits to take measurements and assess the existing structure, our team moved into the drawing office to begin producing the fabrication drawings and layout plans. This stage is crucial to ensure every component is manufactured accurately and the finished installation fits perfectly on site.

Once the drawings were completed and approved by the customer, we were able to order all required materials and begin fabrication in our workshop. Our skilled fabricators then manufactured the staircase to specification, ensuring every section met the required structural and quality standards.

After fabrication, the staircase underwent final checks and inspections before being sent for hot dip galvanising. Galvanising provides a highly durable protective coating that helps prevent corrosion and significantly increases the lifespan of the steelwork — especially important for external staircases exposed to the British weather.

Once returned from the galvanisers, the staircase was delivered and installed at the customer’s site, replacing the old structure with a strong, safe, and fully compliant new access solution.

Why BS EN1090 Matters

This project was completed under our BS EN1090 UKCA certification, which is a legal requirement for companies manufacturing structural steelwork in the UK.

BS EN1090 is the recognised standard that ensures all structural steel is fabricated under strict quality control procedures, with full material traceability, qualified welders, documented inspections, and tested manufacturing processes.

Without BS EN1090 certification, structural steelwork cannot legally be UKCA marked or supplied for construction use. In simple terms, it guarantees that the steelwork being installed is safe, compliant, and manufactured to industry-approved standards.

Supporting Staff Wellbeing with a Local Business - Aram Fitness & Recovery

At Atom Fabs, we know that our biggest asset is our team. After a busy few months in the workshop, we wanted to give something back and focus on what really matters — the health and wellbeing of our staff.

This week we welcomed Aram from Aram Fitness & Recovery, providing sports massage sessions to help the team recover, reduce strain & stress, and keep performing at their best.

Working in fabrication can be physically demanding, and it’s just as important to look after mental health as it is physical wellbeing. Taking the time to reset, recover, and support each other makes a real difference both in and out of the workplace.

This is something we’ve been talking about internally for quite some time. It has always been part of our longer-term plans as we continue to grow and mature as a business. However, with the way Atom Fabs has evolved over the past year—and the calibre of customers we’re now working with—this certification has quickly moved from “nice to have” to a clear necessity.

That shift pushed us to bring this forward sooner than we originally expected, and we’re glad we did.

Achieving Cyber Essentials strengthens our foundations as a business. It means we now have independently verified controls in place to protect against common cyber threats, safeguard sensitive data, and reduce risk across our systems and operations.

Access platform for Yeoford STW

Atom Fabs Ltd — 11/11/2025

Atom Fabs Ltd were approched to design and build a new access platform and stairs for the Lamella tanks on site at Southwest Water's Yeoford site in Devon as part of a multi - million - pound scheme headed by Trant Engineering.

The project got underway by our design team who serveyed the site in July to enable them to produce General Arrangement drawings for the client working at all times with both Southwest Waters' and Trants standards to ensure compliance and to ensure the concept worked with the existing tanks, pipework and ansilaries. This site visit also allowed us to see first hand the challanging site access with single track on a 35- degree hill leading through cattle sheds something to plan for when the install time came.

Once the GA's had been approved the drawings were passed to our structual engineer for sign off and comment before we started the manufature of the platform in our Chard factory with all work to BS EN 1090, once welded cleaned and checked the steelwork was sent to Southwest Galvanisers for Hot dip Galvanising.

The site team took over proceedings in September and installed the compleated platform within the alloted time scale.

As we reflect on the past year, we are proud to recognise it as a period of significant achievement, growth, and collaboration for Atom Fabs Ltd. Across multiple sectors, our team has delivered high-quality fabrication and installation solutions, reinforcing our reputation for reliability, precision, and industry expertise.

One of the standout achievements of the year was the completion of an award-winning stainless steel kerb project for Adex Interiors In Enfield. This project showcased our attention to detail, high fabrication standards, and ability to deliver bespoke solutions that meet both functional and aesthetic requirements within demanding food-industry environments.

We were also honoured to contribute to the £30 million Yeovil Pen Mill Water Recycling Centre, where Atom Fabs supplied and installed handrails, walkways, and access panels. This major infrastructure project highlights our capability to work safely and efficiently on large-scale, technically complex sites while meeting strict water industry standards.

In addition, we successfully supplied and installed access platforms for Trant Engineering, further strengthening our ongoing relationships with leading contractors and demonstrating our flexibility in supporting a wide range of engineering and construction requirements.

Beyond individual projects, we are particularly proud to be an approved supplier of water-industry standard parts, providing reliable call-off solutions to sites across the country. This ongoing work underlines the trust placed in Atom Fabs to deliver consistent quality, compliance, and timely support nationwide.

This year also marked an important period of growth for our team. We were pleased to welcome Brad, Vitor, Hayden, and Joe to Atom Fabs, and we are excited to see how each of them continues to add value, skills, and fresh perspective to the business as we move forward.

New Build Here At Sorcerer Rotational Moulding

We’re excited to share that we’ve started manufacturing another Sorcerer Rotational Moulding machine.

The photo shows the beginning of the lid fabrication – an early stage in the build, with more updates to follow as the project progresses.

Rotational Moulding is a manufacturing process where powdered plastic is heated and slowly rotated inside a mould, creating strong, seamless hollow products with uniform wall thickness.

It’s ideal for producing durable items such as water and fuel tanks, storage containers, bins, playground equipment, kayaks, traffic cones, and large industrial enclosures.

Last week we invited Mick Hurt from SR Welding & NDT Technology Ltd into our workshop to host a welding refresher session and to help guide the welding team as they undertook testing for three different codings. Although our team has decades of experience it never hurts to refresh and develop skills, and to have a team day.

What is “coded welding”?

In the UK engineering and construction sectors, coded welding refers to welding carried out by an individual who has been formally tested and certified to recognised industry standards. These tests—often conducted to British Standard BS EN ISO 9606, or sector-specific codes such as those used in the oil, gas and structural-steel industries—ensure that a welder can consistently produce joints that meet strict safety and quality requirements.

Why it matters

Coded welding is essential in environments where the integrity of a weld could have serious safety implications. This includes pressure vessels, pipelines, structural steelwork, power stations, aerospace components, and offshore installations.

A coded welder’s work is often independently inspected using methods such as X-ray imaging, ultrasound, or destructive testing. The goal is to demonstrate that the weld meets the specification for the exact material, thickness, position and process defined in the test procedure.

How welders become “coded”

To become coded, a welder must complete a welder approval test, supervised by a certified welding examiner. The test involves producing a weld under controlled conditions following a “Welding Procedure Specification” (WPS). If the weld passes inspection, the welder receives a certificate. This qualification is only valid for the specific weld type tested—for example:

Welding process (MIG/MAG, TIG, MMA)
Material grade (carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium)
Joint type (butt, fillet)
Thickness range
Welding position (horizontal, vertical, overhead)

Certificates must be kept current, with regular revalidation to prove ongoing competency.

Growing demand

As the UK invests in new infrastructure projects, renewable energy systems and advanced manufacturing, demand for competent coded welders remains strong. Many employers face skills shortages, making qualifications particularly valuable within engineering and fabrication businesses.
